this is the perfect pairing to your last posting, Rosa, which made me laugh. (I remember those catalogs too--esp. the glow-in-the-dark crucifix and the Testamints, those little "share a mint, share the faith" mints with a cross imprinted on each one and a pithy piece of Scripture on the package.)

I am all for fair trade gifts, and I love shopping experiences like this. BUT since we are all about the Advent conspiracy now, I am very aware that there is still the danger of overspending when buying such gifts, esp. because now I would feel like the money I am spending is helping make the world a better place. So I am totally going to be there for this event--but will have to be extra careful with our/God's dollars.

Our Christmas stockings, which D and I think are the BEST EVER, are fair trade made in Nepal by a woman;s cooperative. And they are large, and colorful and strong thick chunky knit with just enough stretch to fit in oddly shaped gifts. We liked them so much that every time we found new designs we bought them, (we could usually find only one or two patterns in any given year) even if we did not have *need* for them, and we ended up with exactly the right number for our family! (plus one for hanging to hold Christmas cards--or for the bonus BONUS blessing yet to come!)

I loved this peek into your childhood, Rosa! Esp. the back of the van moment you describe--not only was that somewhere i would never have imagined you, but is also brought to mind my own roadtrip memories, lying in the back of my dad's "custom" Suburban, on the bed he built with storage underneath, which mom made mattresses for, and the way the light slanted in through the red canvas curtains (with yellow bees) on the sides, and the aqua-tinted plastic film dad had cut to fit the hatch window in the back, which trapped little air bubbles that we would lay and idly push around within their 2 dimensional world with a finger as we watched the aqua landscape flying by outside and listened to the Carpenters "We've Only Just Begun."

i think it's the macro and micro all together that i love. i can enjoy the aesthetics from a distance and then get close and sort of dive in and get lost amongst all the names and shapes. i think it started as one more way to avoid actually doing my homework, coupled with the REM song 'maps and legends' stuck on permanent repeat in my brain since the early 90's.

Oh dear! Maybe the humor of this poem isn't quite conveyed without EH Shepard's drawings. Or maybe it's the lack of B's silly British accent, he still reads this aloud in a very funny way. This is from the collection "When We Were Very Young".
I've read a collection of his poetry that is quite a bit darker-political poems written during WW2-Milne was a pacifist (and an atheist too, from what I remember.)

this too shall pass, my friend! soon you will wake up one morning from the pain of overly full breasts soaking through your night clothes and you will have that momentary panic--Henry did not wake me up! Is he OK??!!! You will crawl out of the bedcovers to his bed and find, to your relief, his little arms stretched out over his head in relaxed slumber, his little pink rosebud mouth peacefully, innocently slack, his little pj front rising and falling with his slow, quiet breathing. You will gaze upon this image for several minutes, thanking the Good Lord for his protection over your sweet little guy, with your mother eyes you will drink in the color of his skin, the way his fine baby hair is starting to get long around the ears, you will marvel at how big he is, compared to the wrinkled peanut you first brought home.

And then you will gently poke him, so he wakes up and eases the pain in those heavy laden breasts already!

Later in the day, you will realize you are thinking clearly. you will find yourself tossing out four dollar vocabulary words with ease. you will feel good in your head--clear and yourself. and you will realize that, yes, all is not lost. all has just been hibernating.

Thanks for posting about Flora Grubb. It definitely sounds inspiring and I love that it's in our own backyard. Your blurb about succulents and your changing perspective on them really hits home. There is something that has always been off-putting about jade plants. The era that it was popularized carried with it the plastic fruit centerpieces and those funky light fixtures which were the goddesses in the garden with the faux rain. ~Krista
